Zandari Festa 2015 is fast approaching and will take place in Hongdae from October 2nd - 4th. Like you, we couldn’t be more excited and we are already readying our schedules, pens, and maps (essential tools to plan out the best route between each venue) in order to make sure we don’t miss any of our favorite bands. In order to highlight some of the talent performing at this year’s event, DOINDIE and our friends at Korea Gig Guide have teamed up to ask a few of the many exceptional acts five simple questions.
For this installment, we talked with Five Questions with 57, Victim Mentality, Yukari & Smacksoft. This is what they had to say :
Seol: Rather than being referred to as the number Fifty Seven we like to be called Oh-Chill (the numbers 5 and 7 in Korean).
JunHong: I guess most people won’t know who we are. So make sure to check us off on your list of bands to see at the festival! It would be great if you came so we can get to know each other.
Seol: We performed as ‘Rainbow Stage’ for the last two Zandari Festas, and last year was the first time we performed as Oh-Chill. We moved to Seoul recently and are happy to get the opportunity to perform at Zandari again. Also, as each year passes Zandari is getting bigger and bigger and it feels to me like it is becoming Hongdae’s main festival of the year. Because of that we are really looking forward to playing again this year.
JunHong: What she said.
Seol: I’ve never even thought about what to say to a question like this. I would be honored if there were people who came to our shows looking forward to anything.
Seol: I’m looking forward to drinking the beer in the artists’ lounge.
JunHong: The merch booth. There were some shirts made by fans of bands last year that really appealed to me, so I purchased some of them.
# If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Seol: I would go to any place where Biffy Clyro were playing a show.
Kyungho Sohn: Is there anyone around who doesn’t know who we are yet? I thought everyone knew us.
Kyungho Sohn: We have been so busy recently, it has been a while since we have shown our faces around Hongdae. We have an ever-increasing number of female fans who come to our shows; when we play we breathe together as one, respond to each other, share our body heat and make love …. anyway we are most looking forward to meeting all our fans at Zandari Festa 2015.
Kyungho Sohn: When we go up on stage we are so good-looking that all the fans just end up being mesmerized and staring at us. Fans should just be looking forward to seeing us, as we are.
Kyungho Sohn: These days there is not much variety on offer in Korean pop culture. On the whole people only listen to mass-produced mainstream pop. Indie musicians are all too aware of this lack of variety, so in order to introduce people to a more plentiful range of genres and emotional experiences these bands use their own means, to become pioneers of their chosen domains and start to make their voices heard. Like other bands Victim Mentality use SNS as a basic method of gaining fans and communicating with the people who come to our shows; from this base we have begun to spread our music and thoughts around the world. However, if you compare the indie scene to the main pop culture movement, well, it has a lot more financial strength and mass media has more exportability potential, so only a small minority of hardcore fans or people who move in the art scene get to experience these bands. In order for people to improve their quality of life and for humanity to recover, one of the basic requirements is for everyone to have access to a wide range of music genres. I think that the best way for these more underground genres to get more exposure within mainstream pop culture is for lots of musicians across different genres to try and collaborate together on projects. So, this year at Zandari I would love it if Victim Mentality could collaborate with some Kpop girl groups. If Victim Mentality did a show with Girls Day, EXID, Secret or SISTAR it would definitely help improve the quality of life for anyone who watched the show as well as helping humanity to make a step towards recovery, because it would give people a chance to experience a wide range of music in one show.
Kyungho Sohn: Before we get up on stage Krocodile likes to eat some kind of medicinal stuff that helps with his voice. I drink mouthwash. Skorpion drinks alcohol. Tarantula likes to perform on an empty stomach.
Yukari: People should throw away the prejudice that indie bands = rock bands and electronic music = dance music and come out to see some acts they don’t know so well during the festival. I am a solo performer who sings and plays electronic pop music.
Yukari: This will be my third time to take part at Zandari Festa. Whenever the festival occurs the whole of Hongdae has a festival vibe to it, I really like that feeling.
Yukari: I want to see other people's shows and I want to go to their after parties as well. I still havn’t been to one yet and I really want to.
Yukari: I would change it into a world where kind and honest people were the successful ones.
Whang, Bo Ryung: This might be the kind of music you have been looking for.
Whang, Bo Ryung: We met a friend last year when we played a show at SXSW (Austin, Texas), that friend said they would come to Zandari this year. So we applied to play.
Whang, Bo Ryung: For those of you who know us, be looking forward to our tight sound. For those of you who don’t know us, look forward to some post punk n Smacksoft.
Whang, Bo Ryung: I am looking forward to all the other band’s great music.
Whang, Bo Ryung: It would have to be wars. I would love to see peace. A world that needs no money.
