“The band that cannot be defined!” is what funky rock band Ynot?’s leader and vocalist Jeon Sangkyu generally answers when asked to describe his band. Indeed, their name was born of an openness to exploring all kinds of music on their first album, and the members’ shared diversity of influences, from the obvious (Red Hot Chili Peppers) to the less so (Metallica). In 1998 Jeon posted an English flyer looking for “an open-minded spiritual guitarist”; Kim Daewoo answered, and thus a legendary Hongdae partnership was born. True veterans of the scene, having released 3 studio albums, 5 EPs and a great live album, as well as performing more than a thousand live shows and in countless TV appearances, Ynot? continues to evolve and explore different genres from pop ballads to rock (as seen by the addition of keyboardist Yoo Jihoon in recent years), while remaining true to their original funky groove which lends itself so well to dancing and just plain fun rocking out.
The trust between members and undying enjoyment of what they do together even after 17 years is easily apparent on stage. This is truly a band that needs to be seen live to be fully appreciated—few frontmen can rival Jeon’s contagious energy and charisma; his talent for audience interaction and vocal gymnastics, all performed with the biggest grin in Hongdae. There is no better stage on which to watch them than on their home ground of Club Ta; Jeon and Kim have owned this intimate venue for 8 years and turned it into a kind of haven for musicians and audiences looking for good sound, good equipment and an unpretentious family-like atmosphere. If you want to see Ynot? at their finest, be sure not to miss their eponymous track “Why Not?”, with which they always close their show. Not only was it the first song they ever created together, but it remains their favorite to play, as well as the standout crowd-pleaser. The unlikely inclusion of a gwengari (Korean handheld brass gong) partnered with Kim’s burning guitar solo, Son Junho’s passionate drumming and Hwang Hyunwoo’s manic bass, will have you throwing your hands in the air and shouting “why not?!” before the end of the second chorus.
