Band Introduction Concert Preview

On New Year’s Eve of 2014, I experienced the Hongdae Indie Rock scene for the very first time.  I had no idea what to expect, but I immediately fell in love. Though I was witness to an entire night of amazing music and artists, I owe my continued love of the Korean indie scene to the band that stood out the most and remains my favorite, Beatniks. They had such a strong energy on stage that it became contagious, and I couldn’t just stand still and bob my head to the music. I was compelled to jump, bounce, scream along and yell out the songs even though I didn’t know any of them at the time. The musicians were all so into what they were playing that it was impossible to not be excited as well.

It can be difficult to classify the sound of Beatniks as it keeps evolving. They are definitely an energetic indie rock band with electronic influences, but I think of them more like a kaleidoscope of music. If you shake up a kaleidoscope, the pieces are the same, just in a new arrangement. And that is something that is really impressive about this group. Their songs are fluid- it’s not simply about fine-tuning. Instead, their music is ever-changing and constantly moving forward.

Over time, their songs grow in depth as each new layer of music is added. The combination of Han Yoo’s expressive vocals, Dong Hyun Lee’s ever-developing guitar riffs, the hypnotic bass lines of Chang Il Choi, unique drum beats by Sang Il Choi, and the constant tempo changes all move Beatniks towards the goal of honing and creating their own, distinct sound and style. These four talented musicians all come together to make up one amazing and engaging rock band.

Beatniks are absolutely a band you need to see live. A large part of their uniqueness stems from the amount of interactive songs they have. Songs like “Myself” and the newer “Get Down to the Floor” just make you want to get up and move. It is definitely exciting to watch the members run around and dance on stage, or even down on the floor with the crowd. From the audience, you can tell how much they genuinely love what they are doing…and that makes you love it, too. You get lost in the performance, and it’s easy to understand why.

Each show is so much fun because you can feel the energy and enthusiasm they have for sharing music with others. With the new songs, the subtle changes that have been added to the old, and to the new styles they might try as they progress, Beatniks always keep it fresh yet familiar, passionate and fun, and I would urge any newcomers to check them out. It just keeps getting better because Beatniks are a musical journey, and one that is not to be missed.
